Alabama Beats LSU for College Football Title

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- No. 2 Alabama used a stifling defense and five field goals to knock off No. 1 LSU, 21-0, in the BCS National Championship Game Monday in New Orleans.

It was the second BCS title in three years for the Crimson Tide (12-1), who avenged a 9-6 loss to LSU (13-1) in a Southeastern Conference tussle in November.

Jeremy Shelley kicked five field goals, and Heisman Trophy finalist Trent Richardson sealed the victory with a 34-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

Alabama quaterback AJ McCarron completed 23 of 34 passes for 234 yards and was named the game's MVP.

Alabama coach Nick Saban, who captured his third BCS title (his first was at LSU), said his defense, led by linebacker Courtney Upshaw, "controlled the tempo from start to finish."

LSU managed only five first downs and 92 yards of total offense.
