4 New Girl Scout Cookies We'd Rather Buy

NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- We were intrigued to learn that the Girl Scouts have introduced a new cookie to their lineup: a sugar-dusted, lemon-flavored wedge cookie known as the "Savannah Smile."

We'll reserve judgment on the cookie until we've had a chance to try it, but for now consider us a bit underwhelmed. This is the organization that's brought us such perennial delights as Samoas and Tagalongs, so when they say they're introducing a cookie we hope to be wowed by an unprecedented confection. A sugar-dusted lemon wedge wasn't quite what we had in mind.

The Girl Scouts announced the "Savannah Smile" cookie last week, but we're a bit disappointed by its description.

So we decided to do a bit of brainstorming in hopes of inventing the next great Girl Scout Cookie. Here's what we came up with:

S'mores. Samoas (known in some circles as Caramel Delites) are hands-down our favorite variety, a perfect wedding of coconut, caramel and chocolate. But we always thought the name was a bit misleading, perhaps inadvertently hinting at the graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow concoction enjoyed at so many cookouts. So why not complement the Samoa with a S'more cookie, which would nicely evoke a Girl Scout campfire? We envision it as a graham cracker base topped with marshmallow, all encased in milk chocolate.

Thick Mints. We like Thin Mints as much as the next guy, but why do they have to be so thin? We're a thick country, and we deserve a thick cookie. Hey, it worked for Double Stuft Oreos.

Porkies. We know it's becoming a culinary cliché to incorporate bacon into dishes in weird ways. But we've had candied bacon and chocolate-covered bacon, and believe us - it's really, really good. Perhaps a simple bacon-and-chocolate-chip cookie would do the trick, but we'd personally like to see a special variety of Tagalongs topped with a chunk of thick-cut bacon. The peanut butter, bacon and chocolate would combine for the perfect blend of sweet and savory.

The GS Platinum. The Girl Scouts charge a flat $4 across the board for all boxes of their cookies, but isn't it time they introduced a higher-priced luxury brand for the discerning cookie lover? The GS Platinum could borrow heavily from the current king of high-end cookies, Pepperidge Farms, by introducing such elements as luxurious dark chocolate, fruit filling or pecans. You could charge $5 a box and even have a limited-run collector's edition that sells for $20 per box and is available by invitation only.
