Eye Surgery Center Of Michigan First In Southeast Michigan To Perform Bladeless Cataract Surgery Using New LenSx® Laser Technology

TROY, Mich., Dec. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Eye Surgery Center of Michigan in Troy recently introduced bladeless cataract surgery using LenSx® Laser Technology. This is the first facility in Southeast Michigan to provide this innovative technology. The Eye Surgery Center of Michigan is a joint venture ambulatory surgery center with St. John Providence Health System established in 2008 designed to provide the highest level of ophthalmic surgical care.

The FDA-approved LenSx® laser system is based on femtosecond technology used during bladeless LASIK procedures and is safer, less invasive and provides dramatically increased precision in cataract surgery. Cataracts affect over 20 million Americans and cataract surgery is among the most commonly performed operations in the nation, with approximately two million people having the surgery annually.

The LenSx® laser system can replace traditional surgery, which involves the creation of several small incisions made manually with a blade. Now, the femtosecond LenSx® laser creates those incisions, allowing for better results, particularly in the management of astigatism. With custom cataract laser surgery, doctors at The Eye Surgery Center of Michigan a new level or reliability, precision, and safety during surgery.

"Only a small handful of these specialized precision bladeless cataract surgery lasers are available and in use across the country, and we are the only surgery center in Southeast Michigan to have this technology," says Dr. Leslie Grosinger. "Laser refractive cataract surgery is the most technologically advanced option for cataract patients. This is the first major advancement in cataract surgery in over 20 years and we now have the ability to customize procedures according to the distinct characteristics of each patient's eyes. We can better correct astigmatism, which means an increased likelihood that the patient will see better without glasses following the procedure."

The Eye Surgery Center of Michigan was founded by Doctors Leslie Grosinger, Alan Parent, Alan Spiegelman, Marc Siegel, Les Siegel, Marilyn Sultana, David Grey, and Sarah Muenk, all Board Certified Physicians and Surgeons. The Center offers elective outpatient ophthalmologic surgeries and procedures.
