Rod Blagojevich Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in federal prison for political corruption, most notably for his attempt to sell then president-elect Barack Obama's U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder.

Judge James Zagel announced the ruling, which fined the former governor $20,000 and required him to serve out his sentence starting February 16, 2012.

Rod Blagojevich received a sentence of 14 years in federal prison.

Before being sentenced, Blagojevich apologized for his actions and pleaded for mercy.

"I made my share of mistakes. ... I never set out to cause any harm," Blagojevich said.

Zagal accepted his apology but said that neither he nor the jury believed the disgraced politician's plea.
