ORBCOMM Inc. (Nasdaq: ORBC), a global satellite data communications company focused on two-way Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, and business analytics expert, Locus Traxx, today announced that they will utilize the GSM communications service provided by global telecommunications provider, Vodafone, and ORBCOMM’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network to support Locus Traxx’s dual-mode SmartTraxx
shipment monitoring, reporting and alerts solution.
The SmartTraxx system ensures food safety and freshness by providing real-time information about the safety and security of shipments en route. The SmartTraxx system wirelessly reports shipment temperature, door open or closed, location, and security status from customer’s trailers, vessels or equipment via either GSM or satellite communications based on cost and coverage. Continuous access to this actionable data helps customers increase productivity and efficiency throughout the supply chain and make more informed business decisions.
“We look forward to working with Locus Traxx and helping them deliver a high-performance, dual-mode asset monitoring solution that will offer their customers significant operating advantages and bottom-line benefits,” said Marc Eisenberg, CEO of ORBCOMM. “By tapping the power of M2M applications in industries such as transportation and shipping, customers can improve their quality of service, increase safety and security, reduce overhead, and manage their assets throughout the global supply chain more efficiently.”
“ORBCOMM is a leading provider of global M2M services, and we are excited to leverage their expertise to provide our cutting-edge SmartTraxx solution to the transportation, food safety and construction industries,” said David Benjamin, President and CEO of Locus Traxx. “By delivering a constant stream of valuable data to our customers on the location and status of their assets, we can help them assure the quality, safety, and security of their shipments and equipment throughout the entire trip to and from anywhere in the world.”
ORBCOMM will work with Vodafone, who will supply GSM connectivity and its M2M platform, to pursue further opportunities to deliver dual-mode services and help customers worldwide enable their M2M-based solutions. The unique combination of satellite and GSM technology provides customers with low-cost, flexible and reliable connected service for both fixed site and mobile tracking and monitoring applications. The robust dual-mode service will also enable customers to maximize coverage and economy and gain visibility and control over their assets anywhere in the world on demand.
