Aviva USA today announced the winner of Status for Youth, an online campaign of the company’s Street to School commitment that asked people to donate their Facebook status for a day to one of four youth-focused charities. By receiving the most status donations, New York City-based Covenant House will receive $60,000 from Aviva USA to help shelter and care for homeless children.
“By selecting Covenant House as a partner in their Status for Youth campaign, our friends at Aviva USA reached out to our kids and sent a message they can never hear enough – ‘we care and we believe in you,’” said Kevin Ryan, Covenant House president. “This generous grant of $60,000 from Aviva USA will reach into the lives of hundreds of kids and help them with their education and job training. And the public awareness of the plight of homeless kids Aviva USA has helped to raise will bring more people to our mission, helping us save more lives.”
The three other participating charities – Adopt-A-Classroom, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and HELP USA – will receive $30,000, $10,000, and $5,000, respectively, based on the number of status donations each received during the contest.
In addition to the financial contributions from Aviva, each charity also benefited from the increased awareness that this social media program helped generate. The campaign generated more than 14,000 “likes” on Facebook, and more than 20,000 You Tube hits as people were motivated to learn more about Aviva’s Youmanity initiative. Each hit served to raise the visibility of each participating charity.“Each person who donated their Facebook status through this special Street to School initiative made a positive impact on children in need,” said Chris Jones, Aviva USA’s chief marketing officer. “Connecting people to a cause is the concept behind Youmanity and how we intend to help at-risk youth. This fun competition created new supporters through a click of a mouse; it is just one of the many ways we are putting people before policies.” The four participating charities were selected because each of their missions aligns with Aviva’s Street to School Program, a global philanthropic initiative that supports youth-focused charities. Through Street to School, Aviva plc’s goal is to help 500,000 children worldwide get off the streets and into school or professional training programs by 2014.
