Alexander Calder: Hot Trends

Stock quotes in this article:GOOG, MSFT, AAPL

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- "Alexander Calder" is trending as Google(GOOG) pays homage to the sculptor on its home page Friday.

On what would have been Calder's 113th birthday, Google replaced its traditional logo with an interactive one -- a digital representation of a Calder mobile. Users can click and drag parts of the mobile to make it rotate. As a young artist, Calder developed his practice of wire sculpting, which led to his invention of the mobile.

Popular searches on the Internet also include "debt ceiling" once again, as many congressional Democrats are concerned about President Obama's latest push for a deal to reduce the federal deficit.

Obama has maintained his stance that spending cuts and revenue increases be included in the same package when finding a solution to raise the legal debt limit. The White House briefed Democratic leaders on a $3 trillion deficit-reduction proposal on Thursday, which sparked concern about the lack of enforceable measures that will ensure increasing revenue as well. Representatives from the White House said Obama has not agreed to forgo an increase in revenue. Aug. 2 is the deadline to reach a solution on the matter.

"Microsoft" is a popular search after the company reported record fourth-quarter revenue Thursday.

Microsoft (MSFT) saw strong sales of its Office software, but consumers are buying fewer computers with Windows software.

Revenue from the division that includes Windows was Microsoft's only business unit not to experience growth. Revenue at the division fell 1% from a year earlier, a third straight quarterly decline. The popularity of tablets like Apple's (AAPL) iPad have some concerned that consumers are turning to those products instead.

The chatter on Main Street (a.k.a. Google, Yahoo! and other search sites) is always of interest to investors on Wall Street. Thus, each day, TheStreet compiles the stories that are trending on the Web, and highlights the news that could make stocks move.
