NEW YORK (MainStreet) -- Some households have books and clothes stowed away, while others have collectibles such as old coins and magazines, but whatever your house is filled with, chances are you can make some extra cash by selling it. At one time, doing so meant going through the effort of holding a yard sale or taking your stuff down to a pawn shop or thrift store, but today there are dozens of websites that make it easy for consumers to sell their junk. Here are some favorite sites for each kind of item.

For DVDs, Books & CDs: Glyde.com
Glyde was launched by a former eBay executive in 2009 with the goal of making a site even grandmothers could use to sell off their used items. While other sites require users to answer numerous questions just to list an item for sale, Glyde only asks users to list the item and its condition. There's no upfront fee for listing (though the site will take a 12% cut once it sells) and Glyde will provide pre-stamped packaging to make it all that much simpler to ship to a buyer. Consumers can use this site to sell books, CDs, DVDs and video games.

For Gadgets: Gazelle
Given how quickly consumers seem to upgrade their phones, laptops and other gadgets these days, chances are you have plenty of electronics lying gathering dust. There are plenty of sites that will let you sell them, but our favorite is Gazelle. The site is easy to use, offers free shipping and packaging for most items and generally pays competitive rates. An old 8 GB iPhone 3G, for example, could get you more than $100 on the site, even though some stores offer new versions of this model for even less. Gazelle even displays a chart of the average prices offered for each product from month to month so you can get a sense of whether it might pay to hold onto the product a little longer.

For Kids Clothes: Storkbrokers
