5 Vehicles Men Buy the Most

Stock quotes in this article:F, GM

DETROIT (TheStreet) -- Guys are simple. They like pickup trucks and also aspire to own fast, racy cars.

We could say it this way: "GM is for men, VW is for women."

While such blatant simplicity has serious flaws, it is definitely a fair conclusion from looking at the lists of the top five vehicles with the highest percentage of men and women buyers.

Men go for looks, while women go for practicality, according to a study of about eight million 2010 retail car-buying transactions by TrueCar.com. And besides favoring fuel efficiency, women also seem to like imports.

The trend is also clear in the list of the top 22 models purchased by each gender. Of the top 22 with the highest percentage of female buyers, only three were produced by a Detroit company. They included the Jeep Compass, the Chrysler Sebring and the Chrysler PT Cruiser.

Of the top 22 models with the highest percentage of male buyers, 11 were produced by the Detroit Three. Seven were GM(GM) products; the Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado, Avalanche and Colorado; the GMC Sierra and Canyon and the Cadillac Escalade EX. The four others were Ford's(F) F-Series and Ranger and Dodge's Ram and Dakota.

When you think about it, even the vehicle names have gender appeal. The women's preferences included the Eos, the Sportage, the Versa and the Tiguan. By the way, a tiguan is defined as a large female mammal, although Volkswagen has said the name blends the German words for tiger and iguana. And "Sportage?" It may be a nice car, but it sounds like a type of bra. It is definitely a challenge to imagine a guy walking into a dealership and asking to look at one.

Read on for the top five men's choices, as measured by the percentage of retail buyers in 2010.
