BETHESDA, Md., March 8, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- OPNET Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:OPNT), a leading provider of solutions for application and network performance management, today announced new capabilities in its APM Xpert™ solutions that will extend application performance management to encompass the storage infrastructure. Enterprise applications rely on dedicated storage systems to store vast amounts of critical information; however, application performance management solutions often lack visibility into storage performance metrics. Enhancements to OPNET's AppInternals Xpert™ will provide insight into the source of storage related application performance problems. AppInternals Xpert looks deep into the complex software frameworks of modern applications, leveraging vast amounts of performance and forensic data to support all aspects of service assurance from the server perspective. It performs high definition monitoring and forensic analysis for any type of application, and excels in particular in Java and Microsoft .NET environments. AppInternals Xpert leverages a standards-based approach to obtain performance metrics from storage network devices and storage arrays, such as read and write throughput, session and connection errors, and cache hits. OPNET's patented cross-tier analytics leverage this information to pinpoint the root cause of performance problems, accelerating troubleshooting. "Other APM solutions largely ignore the storage domain," according to Yev Gurevich, OPNET Senior Vice President of Engineering. " AppInternals Xpert points to the root cause of performance problems, including those problems that originate in the storage system. Its patented analytics examine thousands of measurements to detect relationships among application components including storage, database, and application server tiers. It utilizes a passive, non-intrusive mechanism to obtain visibility into the storage domain, consistent with OPNET's strategy to minimize application overhead." AppInternals Xpert monitors a wide range of storage vendors, leveraging open standards from the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). OPNET recently joined SNIA, which is a not-for-profit trade association dedicated to developing and promoting standards, technologies, and educational services that expand the breadth and quality of the storage and information management market. "We welcome OPNET to SNIA and are happy that they have made a commitment to make storage less complicated for the end user through the advancement of responsible storage practices that help manage the ever-growing volume of data at businesses today," said Wayne M. Adams, Chairman of SNIA. "We anticipate that OPNET will be a proactive member of the association helping to support our shared mission and values that empower companies in these management processes and we look forward to their contributions within our organization." This latest announcement extends OPNET's high definition approach to application performance management, which emphasizes broad domain coverage and deep visibility into the target domain. High Definition APM embodies the critical attributes of an effective APM solution, and is also characterized by analytics to extract salient information from vast datasets, integration for cross-domain workflows and visibility, and low overhead for production ready solutions.
