Apple Set for iPad 2 Intro Next Week

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Just as uncertainty had started to build around the timing of the next huge Apple (AAPL - Get Report) device, reports that the company has booked an event on March 2 in San Francisco have surfaced.

Boomtown blogger Kara Swisher of the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital site reports that she has confirmed a March 2 event hosted by Apple at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts conference center in San Francisco.

It has been widely speculated that Apple is planning a presentation of its new iPad 2, the successor to the tablet device that reinvented the category last year.

The downtown San Francisco auditorium is the traditional venue for Apple product introductions, including the original iPad, which was unveiled Jan. 27, 2010.

The newest Apple tablet is expected to have two cameras, one on the back and one in front for video chats on Apple's FaceTime service.

The iPad 2 is also expected to work on WiFi and 3G in all U.S. and European networks.

The news comes the same day that Motorola (MMI - Get Report) announced that its Google (GOOG) Android tablet, the Xoom, will launch at Verizon (VZ - Get Report) Thursday. The 10-inch screen Xoom will be the first device to run on Android's Honeycomb software, which was designed specifically for tablets.

The Xoom will sell for $600 with a $20-a-month, two-year data contract, or for $800 without. By comparison, the iPad has a starting price of $500 and ranges as high as $830.

There has been recent speculation Apple's iPad 2 has been delayed, opening up a possible gap where other tablets may rush in.

Apple shares are down 6% in the past three days after hitting an all-time high of $364.90 Wednesday. At these heights, investors can get a little jittery about any potential snags -- like delays -- that could upset the stock's upward momentum.
