EPA Pulls Powertech Permit, Will Draft New One
DENVER (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency has pulled a permit for a company which is hoping to mine uranium in Weld County, Colo., and says it will prepare a new draft permit that will be open for public comment.
The permit would have let Powertech (USA) re-inject groundwater from a test of an aquifer pump. Powertech planned to use information from the test to apply for a permit to recover uranium through in situ mining. Resident James Woodward and Coloradoans Against Resource Destruction, or CARD, had asked in January for a review of the permit. CARD argued the EPA didn't review all critical information before issuing the permit, while Woodward said the permit's conditions didn't have enough protection for drinking water.
