Tupperware CEO: Women Driving Emerging Markets

Stock quotes in this article:TUP

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Through a growing, female-dominated workforce and strong social and business ties with the emerging markets, Tupperware(TUP) continues to be a cash machine through good times and bad.

After experiencing a brief setback in the second quarter due to an isolated accounting issue the company discovered at a Russian subsidiary, Tupperware on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter and full-year earnings that blew past the consensus Wall Street estimates.

The Tupperware party, which offers women the opportunity to organize warm social gatherings and make sales on Tupperware products, has been stronger than ever globally -- numbering in the millions every year.

Tupperware CEO Rick Goings spoke with TheStreet about the economic and social tailwinds that are driving the company forward ...

TheStreet: What are the key emerging market trends that Tupperware is benefiting from?

Goings: This was almost like an epiphany for me. The thing that we're seeing is this emerging middle class in China, India, Indonesia, Turkey and even southern Africa. She immediately comes to brands like ours -- and if you look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs -- food , clothing and shelter -- she may not be able to afford a car or a fancy apartment, but getting our kinds of products says to her friends, "I'm not poor anymore. I can afford Tupperware."

It's amazing. In India, that may be a $4, 500 milliliter water bottle. Rather than buying these PET (Polyethylene terephthalatewater) bottles, she buys one of these -- and it's kind of designer like and it's guaranteed for life.
