DETROIT (TheStreet) -- Ford (F) said January sales rose 13%, paced by strong retail buying.

Like GM (GM) sales, Ford's sales were led by retail rather than fleet buyers, as retail sales rose 27% from the same month a year earlier, led by a 35% increase in retail auto sales.

January sales totaled 127,317, even as sales to rental companies fell 27% and Mercury was discontinued. "We're off to a great start in 2011 with the largest January retail sales increase in more than a decade," said Ken Czubay, vice president of U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service, in a prepared statement.

Combined sales of small cars Focus and Fiesta enabled Ford's small car retail sales to increase by 99%, while Ford achieved its highest retail share in California since 2006. A new Focus will become available in the spring. "Higher gasoline prices are factoring into vehicle purchase decisions," Czubay said.

The mid-sized Fusion set a January sales record of 14,346, up 18%, with retail sales up 39%, while the Ford Escape set a January record with sales of 13,973, up 30%.

Meanwhile, Ford F-Series January sales rose 30% to 35,806 units.

Ford shares were up 1.13% to $16.13 in early afternoon trading Tuesday.
