Bankruptcy No Longer The Credit Disaster It Used To Be
IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 1, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Attorney Timothy G. McFarlin of McFarlin & Geurts LLP, a full-service law firm representing businesses and consumers in California, Utah and throughout the United States, today advised consumers drowning in debt that personal bankruptcy is no longer the credit disaster it used to be. Based on the number of people adversely affected by the financial crisis, the mathematics of credit scoring and pure business practices, bankruptcy is not the financial oblivion it once was. "In the last five years, the number of bankruptcy filers has skyrocketed," said McFarlin. "Mathematically speaking, credit scores are an aggregate, competitive analysis -- like grades on a curve. If an entire class does poorly on an exam, passing grades are adjusted downward." According to the BankruptcyAction website, U.S. personal bankruptcies for 2010 reached 1.5 million by the end of September. This number is 13 percent more than the total for the same period in 2009 and nearly 50 percent more than the same period in 2007. "The fact is, lenders still have to do business," McFarlin continued. "They can't afford to ignore two and a half million people. That said, bankruptcy's moral weight has become significantly less onerous. More people simply view it as a strategic response to severe circumstances."
