Sharps Compliance Corp. (NASDAQ: SMED), (“Sharps” or the “Company”), a leading provider of cost-effective management solutions for medical waste and unused medications generated outside the hospital setting, has launched an essay contest for students in healthcare and related studies. Winners will be awarded a first, second or third prize scholarship for the best essays submitted.
Millions of people in the United States use self-injectable prescriptions at home, at work or while traveling to treat diabetes, allergies and many other medical conditions generating billions of used needles and syringes each year that must be disposed of properly. Improper disposal can lead to needle-stick hazards from disease-causing pathogens that these medical “sharps” may carry.
Sharps Compliance is asking students to help address this challenge by researching real-life events in which someone was stuck by a used needle/syringe that was improperly discarded in the trash of a household, an office, a public restroom or similar location. Entrants will be asked to describe the safe disposal measures they believe could have been taken to prevent that injury and others like it.
“Accidental needle-sticks outside of the hospital and large healthcare setting are a growing issue in our country that needs to be addressed,” said David P. Tusa, Chief Executive Officer and President of Sharps Compliance. “We think it is very important to educate students entering the healthcare field on how widespread the problem is, and to encourage creative thinking to prevent these incidents from happening.”To be eligible to win the scholarship, the participant must be a US or Canadian citizen and enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited university for the Fall 2011 semester in health care-related studies.
