NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- A few emerging market ADRs outperformed global indices last week, while some others posted losses. The Dow Jones and the S&P 500 were up 0.6% each, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 3.3%, and India's Nifty edged up 0.9%. On the other hand, Brazil's Bovespa was down 3.2%.
Warren Buffett sees many opportunities in China, and his Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) aims to invest in the Chinese market, reports say. Now on tor last week's winners and losers among emerging market ADRs.
China: Winners and Losers
China Shen Zhou Mining & Resources (SHZ) gained 128.6%, reflecting unusual trading activity. The stock touched 52-week highs this past week and its five-day average volume outstripped its 52-week average volume. The company declined to comment on any such unusual stock movements. Among others, Jinpan International (JST) and Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMI) gained 20.8% and 14.3%, respectively past week.
CDC Software (CDCS) jumped 11.6%. The company will report third-quarter financial results before the market opens on Oct. 27. Analysts estimate a profit of 22 cents per share, while the company foresees an expanding sales pipeline in the upcoming six months, especially through cross-selling activities. China Yuchai International (CYD) climbed 10.7%. The stock was among the Forbes top five U.S.-listed Chinese firms showing strong investment potential. Major losers included Euro Tech Holdings (CLWT) and New Oriental Energy & Chemicals (NOEC), down 23.6% and 17.6%, respectively. Due to a fatal traffic accident, Euro Tech's $3.2 million contract with Guangxi was cancelled and the completion date has been rescheduled for the second quarter of 2011. Among others, Yucheng Technologies (YTEC), LDK Solar (LDK) and Yingli Green Energy (YGE) shed around 11.7%, 11.4% and 11.2%, respectively. India: Winners and Losers Indian ADRs trading on the NYSE and Nasdaq shed $4.82 billion in valuation for the week ended October 22, with IT major Wipro (WIT) and HDFC Bank (HDB) accounting for a majority of the losses. Only four out of the 15 Indian listed entities experienced gains in their market cap past week. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTE), a leading provider of global business process outsourcing, emerged as the top gainer, up 3.4%, with market-cap growth of $31.5 million at the end of the week. The company is partnering with Rediff.com (REDF) to launch a mobile email service targeting almost 100 million customers in the upcoming few years. Tata Motors (TTM), the largest gainer by market cap (added $355.44 million), stood second in the gainer's list, up 2.9%. Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is seeking to increase its presence in India with logistics and services support from Tata Motors. JLR volumes have been improving from the last fiscal year and, therefore, the company is seeking to open dealerships in new cities in India.Select the service that is right for you!
