Internationally Lauded Artists To Speak At Roger Williams University

Mallika Sarabhai and Taslima Nasrin Examine the Intricate Relationship Between Art and Identity

BRISTOL, R.I., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In celebration of the intricate relationship between art and identity, Roger Williams University will host two pioneers of the international women's movement as a part of its ongoing Civil Discourse Lecture Series. This year's theme, "Artists and Writers at Risk," features Indian choreographer, dancer and activist Mallika Sarabhai, and Taslima Nasrin, an award-winning Bangladeshi author and human rights activist.

On Wednesday, October 20, at 6:00 P.M. , the 2010 lecture series will kick off with a live performance by internationally renowned performer Mallika Sarabhai and her dance troupe, Darpana. Following the performance, Ms. Sarabhai will address the University community on her advocacy of education and women's empowerment through theatrical productions.

The following night, on Thursday, October 21, at 5:30 P.M. , Taslima Nasrin – an artist in exile with multiple fatwas issued against her – will share her struggles for equality as a woman who has risked her life to oppose the gender boundaries of a regimented Muslim society by attending medical school and writing openly against women's oppression.
