was recently named a winner in the 2010 Precast Concrete Institute (PCI) design awards program in the category of best stadiums, arenas and sports facilities.
The award-winning project was the Hahn Hurst Basketball Practice Center on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va. It was selected as one of 30 winners out of 140 entries.
Ashley Smith, the company’s president and chief operating officer, will accept the award on behalf of Smith-Midland at an awards banquet during the PCI Committee Days and Membership Conference, which will be held in Chicago Sept. 22-26.
“We’re very proud of the achievement, and are pleased that PCI recognized the special attention put into the design and customization of the concrete panels used on this project,” Smith said. “One unique aspect of this project was the imprinting of logos and basketballs into the concrete panels. Our people worked diligently to create custom wooden forms that allowed for this customization and resulted in a final product that made us all proud.”
Smith-Midland delivered 538 precast concrete panels to complete the $20 million facility, which houses Virginia Tech’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, which was completed in January 2009.
