McCain Wins Arizona GOP Primary

WASHINGTON - Arizona Sen. John McCain dispatched conservative J.D. Hayworth on Tuesday in the Republican primary in what could be the final campaign for the former presidential nominee.

McCain, 73, spent more than $20 million to beat back an aggressive challenge from Hayworth, who attacked the senator for his shifting stance on immigration and sought to tap into the anti-incumbent rage that has taken down other lawmakers in 2010.

McCain will be the heavy favorite in November.

In Florida, Rep. Kendrick Meek cinched Florida's Senate Democratic nomination by defeating political upstart Jeff Greene, a big-spending real estate tycoon whose links to boxer Mike Tyson and former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss drew headlines. And political novice Rick Scott pushed past an experienced insider to win the state's GOP gubernatorial primary. Scott, who made a fortune in the health care industry, spent $39 million of his own money on his bid.

In Vermont, Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, first elected in 1974, coasted to a nomination for what is likely to be re-election in November.

In Alaska, Sen. Lisa Murkowski counted on voters to reward her experience as she faced a spirited GOP primary.

In runoffs for two Oklahoma seats, longtime Christian youth camp operator James Lankford, 42, defeated Kelvin Calvey, 44, an Iraq war veteran and former state lawmaker in the 5th Congressional District race. Lankford will face Democrat Billy Coyle and two independents in November.

And in the 2nd District, veterinarian Charles Thompson, 47, defeated Oklahoma State University doctoral student Daniel Edmonds. Thompson will face Democratic Rep. Dan Boren, who is seeking a fourth term.
