Stocks Avoid Wild Move for a Change

After the bell, Walt Disney(DIS) topped Wall Street's second-quarter earnings estimates, highlighting the box office performance for Alice in Wonderland and its buyout of Marvel in a statement. Still, shares, which finished 1.3% higher in the afternoon session, were falling in extended hours trading.

Qualcomm(QCOM) and Vodafone(VOD) are participating in the 3G and BWA auction for 93 licenses to provide third-generation services in India. The auction has already reached $11.6 billion, exceeding expectations.

Shares of Sandisk(SNDK) gained 1.7% after it reported strong improvement in flash memory gross margins during the first quarter.

JA Solar(JASO) surpassed Wall Street's expectations with earnings of 24 cents a share on sales of $279 million. Shares fell by 7.5%.

Toyota(TM) returned to a profit in the fiscal year ended in March and projected profit for fiscal 2011 to increase 48%. The stock gained 0.9%, to $77.46.

Mutual fund manager Ameriprise Financial(AMP) said it plans to buy back as much as $1.5 billion of common shares through to its 2012 annual shareholders meeting. The stock traded 1.2% higher.

Casino operator Las Vegas Sands(LVS) is setting its sights on Japan, which its thinks could become Asia's largest gaming market, according to Reuters, which reported that the company plans on expanding its Macau-based Sands China into Japan. Shares rose 1.6%.

AIG(AIG) and the U.K.'s Prudential are in advanced discussions to restructure the $35.5 billion sale of AIA, the U.S. company's Asian unit. The restructuring could reduce the cash consideration by roughly $2 billion but may answer U.K. regulators' objections to the deal.
