China BAK, Euro Tech: Early Volume Plays

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Several stocks trading near $5 were moving on above-average volume during Tuesday's session.

China BAK Battery (CBAK) surged by 21 cents, or 9.3%, to $2.48 after the company said in a presentation filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects full-year revenue of $270 million, which is above the lone analyst target of $240.5 million. Volume hit 82,000 shares in the first few minutes of trading Tuesday, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 2.25 million, according to the Nasdaq.

Conn's (CONN) dropped by 76 cents, or 14.2%, to $4.58 after the consumer appliances and electronics retailer offered preliminary fourth-quarter results. Conn's said fourth-quarter revenue fell 30% from a year ago to $171 million, which is below the Thomson Reuters average estimate of $231.2 million. Conn's said it will release its full fourth-quarter report, on March 25. Volume topped 167,000 shares, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 197,000.

Cerus Corp. (CERS) jumped by 17 cents, or 8.4%, to $2.19 after the biomedical company said its Phase 1 trial of red blood cells treated with the INTERCEPT Blood System met its primary endpoint, with preliminary analysis demonstrating that greater than 75% of treated cells continued to circulate 24 hours following transfusion. Volume topped 358,000 shares, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 258,000.

Euro Tech Holdings (CLWT) rallied by 17 cents, or 9.4%, to $1.98 after the clear water company said that its Yixing PACT Environmental Technology subsidiary has been awarded a $3.8 million contract by a Korean stainless steel company. Volume topped 18,000 shares, compared to the 50-day average daily volume of 392,000.

National Bank of Greece (NBG) jumped by 37 cents, or 16.2%, to $2.65 on speculation that Thursday's EU Summit in Brussels will yield a rescue for Greece as the country continues to struggle with a heavy debt burden. Volume topped 660,000 shares at the start of trading Tuesday, compared to the three-month average daily volume of 1.46 million, according to Yahoo! Finance.
