Energy Movers: Westport, Aegean Marine

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Whether it is pioneering the future of clean technology or refining dirty oil, energy stocks were among the most active and biggest gainers during Tuesday morning.

Westport Innovations(WPRT) was up close to 5% at mid-day on close to triple its average daily trading volume. The Westport gain of 56 cents on Tuesday brought shares to a mid-day price of $12.52.

The PowerShares CleanTech Portfolio(PZD), an ETF proxy for the sector, was only up 0.7% on Tuesday.

Vancouver-based Westport focuses on clean technology solutions for diesel engines, among other transportation engine efficiency solutions. Its most recent news was the sale of $57 million of 5.5 million common shares on Dec. 21.

Aegean Marine Petroleum Network(ANW) was up more than 16%, or $4.62, to $33.15 at midday Tuesday. Aegean Marine had hit a 52-week high of $33.50 earlier in the trading session.

Aegean Marine was nearing one million shares traded at midday, versus an average daily volume of 164,000 shares.

Aegean soared after it announced on Monday that it had acquired Verbeke Bunkering, a Dutch supplier of marine fuel.
