In other bank-related news, Bloomberg reports that BofA, UBS and JPMorgan have been sued by a California public utility over claims they rigged sales of municipal derivatives and shared illegal profits through kickbacks.

The three banks engaged in "allocating customers and markets for municipal derivatives, rigging the bidding process by which municipal bond issuers acquire municipal derivatives, and conspiring to manipulate the terms that issuers received," according to the lawsuit, Bloomberg reported.

On the upside, Travelers (TRV) gained 0.5% to $53.18 after billionaire investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) disclosed in a regulatory filing that it had picked up a stake in the insurer.

Assured Guaranty (AGO) was also among the winners of the day, surging 22.3% to $25.93 one day after the insurer posted a narrowing third-quarter loss. Excluding one-time items, earnings of 44 cents a share handily beat the Thomson Reuters average estimate of 31 cents a share.
