ALVISO, Calif. (TheStreet -- TiVo(TIVO Quote) has slashed the price of its high-definition digital video recorders heading into the holiday season.

A note on the TiVo Web site explains that the company has cut the prices of its HD DVR from $299.99 to $249.99 and its HD XL DVR from $599.99 to $499.99.

With a big question mark still hanging over consumer spending heading into the 2010 holidays, TiVo's move reflects growing unease about the pace of the economic recovery.

TiVo, which competes with AT&T(T Quote), Microsoft(MSFT Quote) and Sony(SNE Quote), also recently revealed plans to sell more of its DVRs into smaller cable TV operators.

The electronics manufacturer is expected to provide more clarity on the spending climate when reports its third-quarter results next week. TiVo beat analysts' estimates during its second quarter, despite a 12% revenue drop.

Shares of TiVo rose 29 cents, or 2.65%, to $11.25 Monday, outpacing the broader advance in tech stocks that saw the Nasdaq rise 1.43%.
