Yankees Win 27th Championship Title

BRONX, N.Y. (TheStreet) -- No longer are there nine-year-old children wondering if the Yankees will ever win a World Series ring in their lifetime.

The New York Yankees defeated defending champs the Philadelphia Phillies in game six of the 2009 World Series by a score of 7-3, taking the series to win their 27th championship title.

Hideki Matsui was named the series MVP after knocking in six of New York's runs Wednesday night, tying a World Series record for most RBIs in a single game held by Bobby Richardson.

Andy Pettitte pitched for the Yankees on three days rest, striking out three Phillies batters while allowing three runs. Mariano Rivera was called upon to record five outs to end the game.

On the other side, Pedro Martinez wasn't sharp despite regular rest, giving up four earned runs in only four innings. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard emerged from his slump to hit a two-run home run off Pettitte in the sixth inning, only it was too little, too late.

The championship win is the fifth for Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Rivera and Pettitte, and the first for Alex Rodriguez, who battled through a tumultuous 2009 season.

In February Sports Illustrated reported that Rodriguez had tested positive in 2003 for two anabolic steroids. Rodriguez then began the season on the disabled list following hip surgery.
