Gold Weighed Down by Rising Dollar
Shares of Barrick Gold(ABX) popped Thursday, but were falling Friday 4.5% to $35.36. The company reported a better than expected quarter and is aggressively unwinding its gold hedges to take advantage of gold's spot price. Harmony Gold(HMY) was also down 5.4% to $9.80. The company recently announced it may expand production by 7%.
Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold(FCX) was down 4.8% to $74.43. The stock will replace Schering-Plough(SGP) in the S&P 100 index. The popular SPDR Gold Shares(GLD) exchange-traded fund was off 1.1% at $101.55. -- Written by Alix Steel in New York.TheStreet Premium Services
