HOUSTON (AP) — Calpine Corp. said Wednesday that it has fired up an electric generating plant near San Diego that will produce nearly 600 megawatts of power.

The Houston-based company said its Otay Mesa Energy Center will produce power for San Diego Gas & Electric customers under a 10-year agreement. SDG&E also will supply natural gas to fuel the plant.

The plant began commercial operation Oct. 3.

The combined cycle power plant is fueled with natural gas and fitted with advanced air emissions control equipment, the company said.

Calpine shares gained 12 cents to $11.77 in morning trading.
