Monday's Earnings Roundup

  • Eaton (ETN Quote) recorded a third-quarter profit of $193 million, or $1.14 a share, falling sharply from the same quarter a year ago. Excluding one-time items, Eaton said it had a profit of $1.21 a share, coming in well ahead of the Thomson Reuters average estimate of 92 cents a share. Revenue tumbled 26% to $3.03 billion, falling short of the consensus estimate of $3.12 billion.
  • Hasbro (HAS Quote) reported third-quarter earnings of $150.4 million, or 99 cents a share, rising from a year ago to beat the Thomson Reuters average estimate of 93 cents a share. Sales of $1.28 billion were nearly unchanged from a year ago but fell shy of the consensus target of $1.32 billion.
  • Weatherford (WFT Quote) notched a third-quarter profit of $77.4 million, or 11 cents a share, down sharply from a year ago. Excluding an after-tax loss, the company earned 13 cents a share in the quarter, matching the Thomson Reuters average estimate. Revenue fell 15% from a year ago to $2.15 billion, also in line with forecasts.
  • BB&T (BBT Quote) posted third-quarter net income of $157 million, or 23 cents a share, down more than 50% from a year ago but better than the Thomson Reuters average estimate for earnings of 22 cents a share. Nonperforming assets as a percentage of total assets increased to 2.48% from 2.19% in the second quarter. The provision for credit losses totaled $709 million in the third quarter, an increase of $345 million compared with the same quarter last year, and exceeded net charge-offs by $263 million.
  • Apple (AAPL Quote) will headline the earnings releases after the close of trading Monday. Analysts expect the Mac computer and iPhone maker will post a third-quarter profit of $1.42 a share on sales of $9.2 billion, according to Thomson Reuters. Apple is notorious for easily beating analysts' forecasts, only to offer a tepid forecast for the following quarter.
