Kohl's to Open 37 New Stores

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Proving once again why it ranks among the best-run companies in the department-store sector, Kohl's(KSS Quote) is preparing to cut the ribbon on 37 stores next week.

The new openings, which will take place on Sept. 30 in six states -- California, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, Texas and Utah -- will create 5,200 new jobs.

At a time when most retailers are in shuttering mode, Kohl's is using consolidation to its advantage.

The Wisconsin-based department-store chain picked up locations from the bankruptcy of Mervyn's. Of the 37 new Kohl's openings, the vast majority -- 35 -- are former Mervyn's stores.
