The major averages sputtered on Friday but still put in a good week.

On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 22.07 points, or 0.2%, to 9605.41, while the S&P 500 slipped 1.41 points, or 0.1%, to 1042.73. The Nasdaq Composite edged down 3.12 points, or 0.2%, to 2080.90.

For the week, though, the Dow rose 1.7%, the S&P advanced 2.6%, and the Nasdaq gained 3%.

The market didn't get a lift from a greater-than-expected increase in the University of Michigan consumer confidence index. It rose to 70.2 in September from 65.
