The stock market on Friday shook off news of a nearly 10% unemployment rate by finishing solidly higher as the Labor Day weekend approached.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 96.66 points, or 1%, at 9441.27, while the S&P 500 moved up 13.16 points, or 1.3%, to 1016.40. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 35.58 points, or 1.8%, to 2018.78. However, for the week, the Dow lost 1%, the S&P 500 gave up 1.2%, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.5%.
