Toyota Puts on the Brakes, Recalls 95,700

TORRANCE, Calif., (TheStreet) -- Toyota(TM Quote) might like to think of itself as the company that's "moving forward," but the car manufacturer just took a big step back Wednesday.

Toyota announced a recall of about 95,700 vehicles in 19 states out of concern that cold temperatures could force the power assist on brake systems to flounder, making it more difficult to brake and translating into longer stopping distances.

Specifically, Toyota said affected cars include particular 2009 and 2010 Corolla and Corolla Matrix models, along with 2008 and 2009 Scion xDs with 1.8 liter engines.

Because the problem relates to cool temperatures, the company will send out notices in September to owners in 19 northern states -- Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Toyota said dealers would install a new intake air connector in the cars at no charge, which should take around an hour.

Toyota's American depositary shares finished Wednesday trading at $86.91, up 31 cents. After-hours, the stock was trading lower by 12 cents.

Elsewhere, ADS's for Honda(HMC Quote) gained 0.6%, while Daimler(DAI Quote) shares slid 1.5%.

Ford(F Quote) was largely flat by the end of the day, gaining only 2 cents at $7.61.
