GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — Regional freight railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming Inc. said Friday that traffic on its tracks fell 1.2 percent in July as shipments of pulp and paper and metals both decreased.

Genesee & Wyoming recorded July traffic of 67,423 carloads, down from 68,245 carloads for the same month last year.

Pulp and Paper shipments fell 22 percent to 8,146 carloads, mainly as a result of lower shipments in the company's southern and Canada regions. Metals shipments dropped 19 percent to 6,559 carloads due to lower steel shipments in the New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Canada regions.

Shipments of coal, coke and ores rose 3.8 percent to 17,270 carloads.

Railroads acquired within the last year contributed a combined 8,616 carloads to July traffic. Same-railroad traffic fell by 9,438 carloads, or 14 percent.
