NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The markets managed to stay at lofty levels Tuesday as they eked out gains.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tacked on 33.63, or 0.36%, to 9320.19, while the S&P 500 rose 3.02, or 0.30%, to 1005.65. The Nasdaq added 2.70, or 0.13%, to 2011.31.

Steve Grasso on CNBC's "Fast Money" TV show, said the market's ability to maintain its record levels set on Monday was significant because the hedge funds tried to push and break the back of the markets and the mutual funds were forced to buy in at those levels.

Pete Najarian said the markets were able to recover today after a light pullback.

Joe Terranova said the market will shoot higher if there is a surprise to the upside in Friday's jobless rate numbers. Grasso said it feels like the whisper jobless number is going to be in line or slightly better.

Melissa Lee, the moderator of the show, said the financials were able to provide some leadership today. Finerman said the commercial real estate sector was "on fire." She said the sector will really get a boost if the fears of huge commercial real estate losses aren't as severe as expected.

She said she is less bearish on IShares Dow Jones Real Estate (IYR Quote) because REITs have been able to raise a lot of money through offerings.

Terranova said Goldman Sachs(GS Quote) is doing well because the capital markets are healing and it, along with Morgan Stanley(MS Quote)are doing well in increasing trading revenue.
