Multiplex Index: The China Syndrome

Stock quotes in this article: FXB , FXE , FXY , JYN

The greenback began a recent march on several currencies, thanks to what's quickly becoming a fun global parlor game of "what did Chinese officials say about the dollar this time."

According to Bloomberg, today's round stars Guan Tao, a Chinese foreign-exchange bureaucrat who wrote that the dollar will probably continue as the globe's chief reserve currency. Writing in Chinamoney Magazine, Guan's comments reassured many investors after Chinese central bankers recent calls for a new, competing currency reserve.

The British pound also advanced on several currencies after a report said that financial services in the U.K. should expect increasing business volumes soon. The Financial Services Survey was put together by the Confederation of British Industry and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

A number of currency ETFs and ETNs were moving today. CurrencyShares British Pound Sterling(FXB Quote) closed the day up 42 cents at $165.51, while CurrencyShares Euro(FXE Quote) gained 5 cents to finish at $140.76. CurrencyShares Japanese Yen(FXY Quote) was down 94 cents to $103.58, while iPath JPY/USD Exchange Rate ETN(JYN Quote) was changing hands down 41 cents to $61.98.

In Multiplex Index news, your friendly destination for today is Madrid. There, at least, the dollar strengthened just enough to justify seeing Land of the Lost on the cheap ... though no one else will.
