Futures Indicate Cautious Start to the Week

By Sara Lepro

NEW YORK -- Investors are beginning a holiday-shortened week on cautious footing.

U.S. stock futures were slightly higher amid mixed moves in overseas markets. Stocks in Asia were lower, while European markets advanced.

Investors are pleased by data showing that European business and consumer confidence rose for a third straight month.

This week, which is shortened by the Independence Day holiday on Friday, brings key data that will give investors a better sense of where the economy is headed.

Of particular importance is the government's monthly employment report, due Thursday.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were up 28 to 8,401. S&P 500 index futures were up 3 to 917, and Nasdaq 100 index futures rose 3 to 1,480.
