COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Financial services firm Synovus Financial Corp. said Thursday that Fred L. Green has resigned as president, with Chairman and Chief Executive Richard Anthony now taking on his responsibilities.

Green had led the company's banking activities since 2006, Synovus said in a statement. He joined the firm in 1995 when it acquired National Bank of South Carolina, where he was president and chief executive officer.

A call to Synovus for further details was not immediately returned.

The announcement follows the firm's slashing of 200 jobs in March. That was on top of the 650 jobs Synovus eliminated in its five-state banking network in September.

Synovus has about 6,700 employees, according to Capital IQ.

Shares of Synovus rose 4 cents to close at $3.16.
