Aryx Therapeutics 1Q Loss Widens On Revenue Drop

FREMONT, Calif. (AP) — Development-stage biotechnology company Aryx Therapeutics Inc. said Thursday its first-quarter loss widened slightly on lack of licensing revenue after ending a partnership.

The company lost $9.8 million, or 36 cents per share, compared with a loss of $9.5 million, or 54 cents per share, during the same period a year prior. It reported no revenue compared with just over $1 million a year earlier.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected a loss of 50 cents per share on no revenue.

In the prior year, the company had a technology licensing deal with Procter & Gamble. That partnership also ended in 2008.

Meanwhile, lower costs helped offset the lack of revenue. Costs and expenses fell 11 percent to $9.4 million as the company completed a midstage study of budiodarone as an abnormal heart rhythm treatment. The company is also developing an anticoagulant agent, warfarin.

Shares of Aryx rose 3 cents to $5 in morning trading.
