Microsoft Windows 7 Works But Won't Wow

Microsoft(MSFT Quote) did the unthinkable this week. It started giving away a late-stage test version of its new operating system, Windows 7.

Anyone can download the code for Windows 7 RC (for release candidate) and try it until June 1, 2010, when users will be asked to pay for it. The software will start shutting down every two hours in March 2010, so it won't become a freebie like browsers Explorer of Firefox. Microsoft hasn't announced prices for its new operating system.

Microsoft is trying to compete with companies such as Google(GOOG Quote) and Red Hat(RHT Quote), whose free or cheap products have been attracting small-business customers. The software giant is offering plenty of Web support and trying to address problems raised by Windows 7's failed predecessor, Vista.

I've been testing a beta version of Windows 7 during the past few months. While far from perfect, the software is a step forward for small businesses.

What you get: Windows 7 offers all the bells and whistles of Vista. Most importantly, it works.

Despite all the drama surrounding Vista, the system offered several excellent small-business features. The search bar was superior to the ones you can download from Yahoo(YHOO Quote) and Google. It was easier to troubleshoot and fix. I also liked the improved security and its ability to sync with cell phones.

However, Vista required a high-powered computer to work effectively. Early versions could crash every printer and ancillary device known to man. And third-party support was pathetic.
