LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mercury General Corp., which provides automobile, homeowners and commercial property insurance, on Monday reported a first-quarter profit, reversing a year-ago loss, helped by investment gains even as written premiums declined and the company cut 7 percent of its work force.

MIAMI (AP) — Watsco Inc., a U.S. distributor of air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment, on Monday said it fell to a first-quarter loss as sales slumped amid the recession and a seasonal lull.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Calgon Carbon Corp., which makes water and air purifying systems, said on Monday its first-quarter profit fell 41 percent driven by a one-time gain in the prior-year quarter, but met Wall Street expectations.

NEW YORK (AP) — Media company E.W. Scripps, which earlier this year shut down Denver's Rocky Mountain News, said Monday that weak advertising spending and a slew of charges led to a net loss in the first quarter.
