Abiomed Gets FDA Approval For New Heart Pump

DANVERS, Mass. (AP) — Abiomed Inc. said Wednesday the Food and Drug Administration approved its newest version of the Impella heart pump.

The stock jumped 60 cents, or 10.8 percent, to $6.15 in after-hours trading, following the announcement. Shares rose 2 cents to close at $5.55 during the regular trading session.

The company said the FDA approved the Impella 5.0, which is similar to the Impella 2.5 approved in June. The newest version provides circulatory support for periods of up to six hours. It is a catheter-based pump that helps reduce the workload on the heart muscle.
