SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (AP) — Headwaters Inc., a diversified materials and services provider for the energy, construction and home improvement industries, said Tuesday it will cut an unspecified number of jobs at its Alabama coal cleaning facilities.

The job cuts are due to a decline in demand stemming from the ongoing recession, the company said in a statement. Headwaters noted metallurgical coal sales have been especially soft during the two most recent quarters.

The South Jordan, Utah-based company also said it will combine its coal cleaning and coal combustion products businesses in an effort to improve sales and take advantage of operating synergies between the two units.

Headwaters estimates it will save between $8 million and $10 million by merging the operations, which will be operated under the name Headwaters Resources.

As part of the reorganization, Kenneth Frailey will retire as president of Headwaters Energy Services, the coal cleaning business.
