Abiomed Says FDA Approved Portable Heart Device

DANVERS, Mass. (AP) — Abiomed Inc. said Monday that Food and Drug Administration regulators have approved its AB Portable driver heart device.
The 35-pound rechargeable driver comes with a hand pump and power supply. The driver is intended for use by heart failure patients who have been implanted with the AB5000 Circulatory Support System. Abiomed said patients using the device can recover from heart surgery at home instead of in a hospital. It says the device has a long battery life, recharges quickly, and has a liquid crystal display screen with icons that are easily readable by patients.
