Chip Stocks End the Day Mixed

Chip stocks seesawed Wednesday, mirroring turbulence in the broader market.

A rally based in part on a not-so-terrible durable goods report faded in the afternoon, taking with it tech-stock gains, though the major indices did recover modestly by the time the market closed. Among the semiconductors, STMicroelectronics(STM Quote) -- which makes components for long-lasting goods in addition to those for computers -- maintained gains, finishing the day up 7.3% at $4.71. Applied Materials(AMAT Quote) also rose, gaining 3.8% to $10.99.

Among the other winners:

  • Advanced Micro Systems(AMD Quote) rose 1% to $3.17.
  • Maxim Integrated Products(MXIM Quote) rose 0.7% to $13.48.
  • Nvidia(NVDA Quote) rose 1.6% to $9.94.

    • Among the day's less fortunate:

  • Texas Instruments(TXN Quote) fell 1.3% to $16.43.
  • Intel(INTC Quote) fell 0.4% to $14.94.
  • National Semiconductor(NSM Quote) fell 2% to $10.16.
  • Broadcom(BRCM Quote) fell 3.8% to $19.80.
  • Atmel Corp.(ATML Quote) fell 4% to $3.63.
