This Week's 'Barron's' Roundup
Editor's note: Welcome to Stockpickr's "Barron's Roundup." Each weekend, James Altucher presents Stockpickr portfolios related to articles in the latest issue of Barron's.
Bear Turned Bull: Barron's speaks with Barry Ritholtz, CEO and director of equity research at FusionIQ. Ritholtz and business partner Kevin Lane manage around $100 million. Ritholtz says a significant rally of 20% to 30% could be in the cards for the stock market. Stocks he likes include Cubist Pharmaceuticals (CBST), AeroVironment (AVAV) and Luminex (LMNX).
Small-Cap Pro: Barron's talks with Nick Galluccio, President and CEO of Teton Advisors, an affiliate of Gabelli Asset Management. Teton holds $420 million in a number of mutual funds and private accounts under the name Gamco Westwood. Galluccio manages the Gamco Westwood SmallCap Equity Fund (WESCX), along with five other Westwood funds. Stock he likes include Zoran (ZRAN), J. Crew (JCG) and Tiffany & Co. (TIF).
Package Profits: Barron's says beaten-down packaging stocks could rebound next year due to the sharp drop in crude oil, which has lowered the cost of raw materials like plastic and resin. Barron's likes Crown Holdings (CCK) and Owens-Illinois (OI).
Pension Problems: Barron's says the bear market and new regulations have left many corporate pension plans underfunded. Some of the companies that could have problems are PPG Industries (PPG) and Eastman Chemical (EMN).
Bullish and Bearish: Each week, Barron's publishes bullish and bearish stories on a variety of stocks. We present summaries of those stories in this portfolio. This week, there are bullish stories on CME Group (CME), Leucadia National (LUK) and NYSE Euronext (NYX).
Latest Activist Purchases: Which companies are the top hedge funds chasing? This week's list includes JA Solar (JASO), Temple-Inland (TIN) and Double-Take Software (DBTK).
Research Reports: The latest analyst research highlighted by Barron's, including reports this week on General Electric (GE), Sierra Wireless (SWIR) and Guess? (GES).
Top Insider Purchases of the Week: Insider purchases are a lot more predictive than insider selling. Barron's lists companies where managers are buying stock, and we build a portfolio with those companies' stocks. There has been interesting activity in Icahn Enterprises (IEP), Weatherford International (WFT), Zale (ZLC) and Hormel Foods (HRL).
