Obama Continues Filling Out Team
CHICAGO -- The man who's served as President George W. Bush's defense secretary will be staying on.
President-elect Barack Obama said Monday he's chosen Robert Gates to continue as Pentagon chief. It's a move that brings continuity amid the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the terrorism that erupted last week in India. Obama says Gates won the confidence of U.S. commanders and military personnel. He says Gates will face a new mission of bringing a responsible end to the war in Iraq. President-elect Obama has also chosen Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano to head the Department of Homeland Security. He told a Chicago news conference Monday that Napolitano has spent her career protecting people, saying she understands the need to protect against terror attacks and to respond to natural disasters -- and that she also understands as well as anyone the danger of unsecured borders. The announcement came as Obama filled out the key national security posts in his Cabinet. In another appointment, the president-elect named Susan Rice to be U.S. ambassador to United Nations.>To order reprints of this article, click here: ReprintsTo begin commenting right away, you can log in below using your Disqus, Facebook, Twitter, OpenID or Yahoo login credentials.
