New database and middleware license sales were strong, growing 15% year over year in constant currency, to $2.2 billion, of which BEA Systems contributed $93 million, Catz said. The category took in $3.9 billion overall, up 16%.

"Our strategy in technology is to remain No. 1 in database software and increase our overall market share," Ellison said. He announced that a "major database innovation" will be announced in September at the company's annual conference, which drew 43,000 IT professionals last year.

Registration for the conference is up 20% from this time last year, an indicator of the company's future prospects, said co-President Charles Phillips.

Operating margin was 41%, vs. 39% during the same quarter of 2007.

Oracle, the dominant supplier of database software, is challenging IBM's(IBM Quote - Cramer on IBM - Stock Picks) lead in middleware and SAP's(SAP Quote - Cramer on SAP - Stock Picks) dominance in application software.
