Small-cap stocks took a tumble along with the major indices Monday. The Russell 2000 fell 0.8% to 719.81, and the S&P SmallCap 600 decline about 1% to 380.68. UAL UAUA, parent company of United Airlines, fell on news the airline plans to lay off 950 pilots. The stock sank $1.07 or 15% to $6.09. The fall came as part of a sector slide in airlines as oil prices rose Monday. US Airways LCC sank 19.4% to $2.54; Northwest Airlines NWA fell 17.3% to $5.51; and Continental CAL declined 16% to $11.96. Cable provider RCN RCNI surged Monday following a positive mention in Barron's over the weekend that described the stock as undervalued. Shares climbed 12.6% to $11.80. Gastar Exploration GST traded up 16.6% to $2.60 after the company announced drilling results of its East Texas properties. The natural gas and oil exploration company drilled LOR 6 for $8.4 million, below the expected cost average of $12 million. Other big gainers Monday included Uranium Resources URRE, which climbed 28% to $3.30, and Hydrogenics HYGS, which surged 14.6% to $1.21. Among the losers was Radian Group RDN, which fell 15% to $2.01.
