Tomatoes are off the menu at fast food restaurants including McDonald's (MCD Quote), Burger King (BKC Quote) and Yum! Brands' (YUM Quote) Taco Bell, and stores such as Wal-Mart (WMT Quote), after the Food and Drug Administration expanded its warning on June 9 against a rare form of salmonella.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there have been 167 reported cases caused by the rare bacteria -- called Salmonella saintpaul -- since mid-April. The most dangerous varieties of tomatoes are the red Roma, red plum and round red tomatoes. Confirmed cases have been reported in the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.Ag Stocks Survive Attack of Killer Tomatoes |
